Making a switch for the Moates F2

by Mike Clouser

First you need a 3 position spdt switch, I used a toggle with center off, and you need a cable to attach it to the F2. It turns out that a CD-ROM to sound card cable you would find in a PC (MPC-2) plugs right into the Moates F2.

Here is the pinout, Pin 1 is Ground, pin 2 and 3 are control pins, pin 4 isn't used, see picture below:

The plug on the CD-ROM cable isn't actually wired right for the F2, so you will have to switch some wires around. This is fairly simple, just gently pry the plastic tab up and pull the wire from the connector, and the re-insert them in the order desired.

Here is the connector before I moved the wires:

Here is the connector after I moved the wires:

Next solder the wires to the switch, make sure the ground is in the middle, the other two don't matter, it just determines which way you will have to throw the switch to connect a control pin to ground. If you want to present the lower half of the module (000000-03FFFF) then no connections are required (switch in middle). If you want to present the upper half of the module (040000-07FFFF) then connect pins #1 and #2 (switch thrown so there is a connection between ground and pin 2). If you want to disable the module and access the 'stock' tuning in the EEC, connect pins #1 and #3 (switch thrown so there is a connection between ground and pin 3).

For example, in the picture of the switch below, when it is connected, the red wire is pin 1 on the F2, the black (middle) wire is ground, and the white is connected to pin 3 on the F2. So to connect pins 1 & 2, push the switch toward the white wire.
