4 cylinder to 5.0 conversion



Why a conversion?

Finding a 5.0 liter Mustang for cheap is getting hard to do, and finding one that isn't already ragged out is even harder. You can pick up a 4 cylinder Mustang relatively cheap, if not free.


What do I need?

Here is a list of things you need to do the conversion, listed in categories, use your own judgement as to what you want to end up with.

Engine:

  • 5.0 Liter donor engine from intake to oil pan with all accessories,distributor, sensors, airbox, airtube from TB to Airbox(or MAF), clutch fan (unless you run electric).
  • Engine wiring harness,02 wiring harness,Engine control module. Try to find a wiring harness close to the year of your car, 91-93 moved some of the connectors around for the dash wiring harness. So if you have a 91-93 try to get a harness from a 91-93. If you have earlier get a earlier harness(89-90 for MAF, 88 Calif.) You can put a newer harness in an older car, it just takes a wiring diagram and some patience.
  • Throttle cable
  • Radiator: May need a larger one, check the one that came with it, some 4 cyl cars had a two-core design that will work with a stock motor.
  • Flywheel(pre-81 302s have the 'early' imbalance of 28 oz.-in. If the 302 is 82 and later it will be 50 oz.-in. imbalance)
  • Motor mounts
  • K-Member: The K-member will work, just take the brackets off that the 4 cylinder mounts were bolted to, then your V-8 mounts will bolt right up in those slotted holes.

Transmission:

  • T-5: If car was equipped with manual transmission originally, you only need a clutch cable, bellhousing,flywheel, clutch and pressure plate, and a T-5 out of a 5.0 liter car. Otherwise you will need pedals, clutch quadrant, shifter handle, shifter boot and trim.
  • Automatic: If car was equipped with an automatic, you just need an auto of your choice(C-4,AOD), and a T.V. cable, and possibly a shifter, if not you need pedals and a trim piece that goes around shifter.
  • Bellhousing bolts
  • Trans to bellhousing bolts
  • Double hump crossmember, for dual exhaust (86-up V8)
  • Starter

Exhaust:

  • Plenty of options here, use stock 5.0 stuff or get aftermarket stuff.

Fuel system:

  • Stock fuel pump and fuel tank was the same from 4 to 8 cylinders
  • Fuel lines are different, you will need the lines from the tank to the fuel rails.

Drivetrain:

  • 4 cylinders came with 7.5" rear ends, I highly recommend going to an 8.8. It will bolt right up and will take more abuse
  • As long as the driveshaft is 45.5" inches long from center to center and 28 spline, it will work.

Suspension:

  • The stock springs will work well for a drag car, but if you want the car to handle well you will want to replace them.
  • Sway Bars: The 4 cylinder cars had a smaller front sway bar and sometimes no back one, upgrade these for better handling
  • Shocks: recommend upgrading, but like the rest of the suspension, you can get by without this.

Brakes:

  • 4 cylinder brakes are smaller, and do not work well with the added weight/power. I won't go to much into upgrading the brakes here, as I want to write a separate article about that.
  • Front Brakes: all 83-86 and 87-93 4 cylinder cars have 10" front disc, 87-93 5.0 cars have 11". You will need steering knuckles, brake hoses,calipers, and rotors off of a 5.0 liter car. Another option is upgrade to SN95 brakes. Just remember the 4 cylinder front hoses are different so you will need some for a 5.0 liter car no matter what you do.
  • Rear Brakes: 4 cylinder cars have 9" drums, same as the V8 cars, but I recommend upgrading these to rear disc. You can use either the Ford Motorsport kit, SN95 rear brakes, or some 87-88 Turbo coupe rear brakes. There are some other options available too, see my brake upgrade page.

Electrical:

  • Tach: The 4 cylinder one will not work. Some Fox bodies have a tach that is adjustable between 4,6,8, cyl. If you are unlucky like me, and didn't have one, here is an article on how to modify one to work: 4 cyl tach upgrade
